The excitement is building for the 2023 World Snooker Championship as defending champion Ronnie O’Sullivan prepares to kick off his campaign against China’s rising star Pang Junxu.
O’Sullivan, who is already a seven-time winner of the championship, is gunning for an unprecedented eighth title in the modern era. But first, he will have to navigate past the 23-year-old Chinese player, who has been making waves in the sport lately, having reached the Welsh Open semi-finals and WST Classic final in the past few months.

Should O’Sullivan progress, he faces a potential blockbuster last-16 showdown with either Ding Junhui or Hossein Vafaei, making for an unmissable clash between snooker legends.
But O’Sullivan isn’t the only top player facing a tough opening game. Former champion Judd Trump, who finished as runner-up last year, faces Scotland’s Anthony McGill, while three-time winner Mark Williams will play Jimmy Robertson. And with Jack Lisowski taking on Noppon Saengkham, it could be one of the most exciting ties of the round.
On the other side of the draw, four-time champion Mark Selby will face off against Matthew Selt, while John Higgins takes on David Grace, with the winner setting up a clash against either Kyren Wilson or Ryan Day.
Australia’s Neil Robertson, the 2010 champion, also faces a tricky opener against Wu Yize, while Mark Allen and Ali Carter will battle it out against Fan Zhengyi and Jak Jones respectively.
The competition promises to be fierce, and fans are eagerly anticipating the start of the tournament, which kicks off on Saturday. All eyes will be on O’Sullivan, as he looks to make history by lifting the trophy for an eighth time.
