Sampdoria relegated to Serie C for the first time in club history

Sampdoria have suffered a historic relegation to Serie C after a goalless draw against Juve Stabia on the final day of the Serie B season. The result sees the Genoese club finish 18th, marking the first time in their 78-year history that they will play in Italy’s third tier.

Despite a 1-0 victory over Salernitana in the penultimate round, Sampdoria’s fate was sealed by their inability to secure a win in their final match. The club’s season was marred by instability, having gone through four managerial changes, starting with Andrea Pirlo and ending with Alberico Evani, who was supported by former Sampdoria legend Roberto Mancini.

The team’s struggles were unexpected, given the significant investment in the squad, including high-profile signings like Gennaro Tutino and Massimo Coda. However, the club failed to find consistency throughout the season, leading to their unprecedented drop.

In other developments, Cittadella and Cosenza will join Sampdoria in Serie C after finishing in the bottom three. Brescia secured their safety with a 2-1 victory over Reggiana, while Frosinone and Salernitana will contest the relegation play-out to determine who remains in Serie B.

At the top of the table, Sassuolo and Pisa earned direct promotion to Serie A, finishing first and second, respectively. Spezia, Cremonese, Juve Stabia, Catanzaro, Cesena, and Palermo will compete in the promotion play-offs for the final spot in the top flight.

Sampdoria’s relegation marks a significant low point for a club that has previously won the Serie A title and reached the European Cup final. The challenge now lies in rebuilding and striving for a return to higher divisions in the coming seasons.
