Gjert Ingebrigtsen, the father and former coach of Norwegian Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen, has publicly denied allegations of physical abuse made by his sons, stating that while he may have been “overly protective,” he never subjected them to violence.
The accusations emerged last year when Jakob and his brothers Henrik and Filip, who are also well-known middle-distance runners, claimed they had been victims of physical violence, threats, and controlling behaviour during their upbringing and athletic careers under their father’s guidance.
Gjert Ingebrigtsen acknowledged that he placed “high demands” on his children during their sporting development but insisted this stemmed from love and concern for their success. He stated, “I am aware that I have been overly protective and put a lot of pressure on my children, but I have never used violence.”
The Ingebrigtsen family, long regarded as one of Norway’s most successful sporting dynasties, rose to international fame not only through their achievements on the track but also via a popular television documentary series. However, the relationship between the brothers and their father-coach has been strained for several years, culminating in the allegations last autumn.
Gjert Ingebrigtsen also claimed that he had previously attempted to resolve the situation privately but was unable to reach an agreement with his sons. He expressed disappointment that the matter had escalated to the public domain.
The Norwegian Athletics Federation has been monitoring the situation closely, but no formal action has been announced. The case continues to draw attention, given the family’s high-profile status both within athletics and in Norwegian public life.
