The ClimbMT National Bouldering Championship 2024 is set to take place on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at Ġebla in Mrieħel, offering a full day of thrilling action from 9:00 AM to 9:30 PM. Organised by ClimbMT, Malta’s national climbing organisation, this eagerly anticipated event marks the second edition of the championship and promises to bring together climbers of all levels in a showcase of talent, determination, and camaraderie.
This year’s championship is open to climbers of all abilities and ages, split into three main categories: Youth, Open, and Amateurs & Masters. Whether you’re a seasoned competitor or a climbing enthusiast looking for your first taste of competition, there’s a place for everyone. Participants will compete in male and female divisions, ensuring a fair and exciting contest across all tiers.
Youth
The Youth category caters to climbers born between 2007 and 2015 and is divided into five age-based tiers:
- Youth E (Born 2015+)
- Youth D (Born 2013–2014)
- Youth C (Born 2011–2012)
- Youth B (Born 2009–2010)
- Youth A (Born 2007–2008)
Youth climbers must hold a valid Maltese residence card or citizenship to compete in this category. Youth C, D, and E climbers will also enjoy a special mini-final to cap off their competition.
Open
The Open category is for the most competitive climbers, including Youth A and B participants as well as adult climbers. Like the Youth category, participants must have Maltese residency or citizenship.
Amateurs & Masters
This category is perfect for those who want to experience the excitement of competition without the pressure of professional performance. Open to all skill levels and nationalities, this wave encourages climbers to focus on having fun while testing their limits.
Competition Format
The competition follows an engaging and dynamic format. Each climber will have 2 hours to attempt 15 boulder problems, with judges counting the number of attempts for each problem. Points are awarded based on progression, with 100 points for reaching the top, 50 points for Zone 2, and 25 points for Zone 1. However, one point is deducted for each additional attempt beyond the first, encouraging careful route reading and strategic climbing.
The top 12 climbers of each gender from the Youth A, B, and Open categories will advance to the semi-finals. From there, the top 6 climbers will proceed to the finals, where the National Bouldering Champions will be crowned.
