Sliema Frank Salt concluded the first round of the 2025 Summer Water Polo League in emphatic fashion after defeating title rivals San Ġiljan MAA Daikin 15-11 in a top-of-the-table clash that lived up to its billing. In a match that featured sharp attacking phases and tactical discipline, Sliema showcased their credentials with a statement victory that not only placed them above their rivals in the standings but also demonstrated their growth as a competitive unit.
The encounter opened with both teams trading goals, but it was Sliema who established control by the end of the second session, holding an 8-5 lead. Greek import Elijah Schmert spearheaded the charge with key goals, supported ably by Nikolai and Darren Zammit, whose efforts helped Sliema stretch their lead to a commanding 14-7 by the close of the third session.
San Ġiljan attempted to mount a comeback in the final quarter, reducing the deficit to 11-14 at one point, with Jake Bonavia converting two penalties and Aaron Younger scoring twice. But their resurgence came too late, and a final goal by Liam Galea secured Sliema’s victory.
Sliema’s efficiency in extra-man situations was crucial, particularly in contrast to San Ġiljan’s wastefulness when numerical advantage opportunities came their way. Sliema goalkeeper Gianluca Nixxari also delivered a composed performance, denying San Ġiljan at critical moments.

Elsewhere, in a thrilling encounter, Sirens Peak Insurance overcame Valletta Build Fitness 18-14. Sirens took a 5-2 early lead, but Valletta fought back in the second session. However, inspired performances by Nicholas Bugelli and Zak Tanti ensured Sirens held firm and extended their lead again in the third session. Valletta briefly reduced the gap to 11-8 in the final minutes, but Sirens pulled clear once more to wrap up the win.
