Marsa Sports Complex inaugurated

A sports hub in Marsa which has cost around €5.5 million was inaugurated on Friday by Prime Minister Robert Abela and Education Minister Clifton Grima, who is also responsible for sport.

At the opening, the Prime Minister said that the project is another testimony to the government’s fulfilment of its promises. He spoke about the government’s commitment to have sports facilities of international standards where athletes can reach the next level. Over the past decades several administrations had tried to upgrade the old facilities but works were always left unfinished.

The PM said that the government’s vision for this sector is that more results in sport will further inspire others. Abela said that for this vision to be fulfilled, the country needs to be moving forward with a strong economy that invests in its people, and a strategy with the necessary resources to complete projects along with a government with the will to fulfill its promises.

The PM said that with the investment made, the sports community will benefit from a hall which can be used for various activities, a modern pavilion of 900 square meters for gymnastics and other disciplines which is also equipped with modern equipment and which accommodates 300 spectators. It added that the complex also has a fitness lounge of the highest level, as well as offices which will be used both by SportMalta along with other various sport associations. There are also dressing rooms and other ancillary facilities.

Minister Grima said that this project is part of the government’s vision to create a sports hub which includes facilities of the best level for various sports disciplines. He said that through this vision, the government is aiming for Malta to have sports facilities of international standards which serve as a foundation for the sports industry.

SportMalta CEO Mark Cutajar said that his organisation has grown in terms of facilities and human resources, both in training and in knowledge, throughout the last ten years.
