This past weekend, Malta’s top weightlifters talent was on display at the prestigious Trophy of the Blue Swords in Meissen, Germany. The event saw two of Malta top athletes, Rylee Borg and Tenishia Thornton, deliver impressive performances among some of the world’s top competitors.
Rylee Borg was the first to compete, successfully lifting 109kg in the Snatch and 142kg in the Clean and Jerk, amassing a total of 320 points. Borg’s consistent performance set a positive tone for Malta representation at the tournament.
Later in the day, Tenishia Thornton took the stage in the third and final group. Thornton successfully executed all six of her attempts, finishing with an 85kg Snatch and a 107kg Clean and Jerk, totaling 361 points. Her flawless performance highlighted her readiness and determination.
This year marked Malta debut at this elite tournament, which is renowned for attracting the world’s top athletes. The women event was won by Belgium Nina Stercks, while Julio Mayoral of Venezuela claimed victory in the men category.
The commendable results by Borg and Thornton are not only a testament to their hard work and dedication but also crucial for their preparation for the upcoming World Junior Championships in September.
