Peru triumphs on home soil

Peru celebrated a landmark moment in international sport as the host nation emerged victorious in the men’s categories at the World Weightlifting Championships held in Lima from April 30 to May 5, 2025. The prestigious event brought together 531 young athletes from across the globe, marking the first time in history that the under-17 and junior categories were contested simultaneously at a single championship.

The six-day competition unfolded at the Polideportivo 3 within the Videna-IPD complex, transforming Peru’s capital into the epicentre of global youth weightlifting. The innovative format allowed fans to experience simultaneous men’s and women’s events on two separate platforms, a unique setup that earned praise from both athletes and spectators.

Organised under the leadership of Peruvian Weightlifting Federation President Manuel del Castillo, and with strong backing from the government and the Peruvian Sports Institute (IPD), the championship drew participation from traditional powerhouses including China, South Korea, and Bulgaria. Yet it was the host nation’s athletes who rose to the occasion, outperforming their more historically dominant rivals and securing a memorable victory in the men’s team competition.

The Peruvian delegation featured 36 athletes, many of whom were developed through IPD’s Athlete Development Programme (PAD), the Ica-based IPD Academy, and CEDE School. Their performance showcased the strength and potential of the country’s investment in youth sport.

The opening ceremony, held at the Municipal Theatre, was attended by notable dignitaries including Mohammed Jalood, President of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF); Renzo Manyari, President of the Peruvian Olympic Committee (COP); IPD Head Federico Tong Hurtado; and del Castillo himself.

The competition saw standout performances from international athletes as well. On the opening day, Brazil’s Isanelly Da Silva (40kg) and Japan’s Kotaro Tomari (55kg) both set new world records, setting the tone for a high-calibre championship. In the women’s team event, Venezuela topped the podium ahead of the United States and Mexico.

The event concluded with a celebratory closing ceremony at Hotel Los Delfines in San Isidro, where IWF Executive Board member Sam Coffa was in attendance. In his closing remarks, COP President Manyari hailed the success of the championship, stating, “We are working at a superlative level of organisation.” IWF President Jalood echoed the sentiment, saying, “In 54 years, this country has hosted 10 world events, and Lima has become the world capital of weightlifting.”

The championships not only marked a competitive triumph for Peru but also positioned the country as a premier destination for international sporting events, blending athletic excellence with flawless organisation.
