64th Malta – Syracuse Race Taking Place on Saturday

The Royal Malta Yacht Club and the Lega Navale Italiana (Sezione Siracusa) will be hosting the 64th edition of the Malta-Syracuse Offshore Yacht Race, which is one of the oldest races of the Mediterranean.

Conceived by John Illingworth, a famed sailor in the British Navy, its name has been written in the annals of Mediterranean sailing history. Since the first edition, the race has always welcomed boats from Italy and Malta, eager to race in a highly competitive yet friendly environment.

Alternating annual directions of sailing means that, the 80 nautical mile Malta – Syracuse Race feet will set sail from Malta  and will finish in Syracuse this year.

The fleet on the starting line will consist of 28 boats, of which 12 will be Maltese boats.

Amongst the fleet are Ferdinando Arcucci’s Capitano Corragiosi winner of the 2008 trophy, whilst Mark Camilleri’s Pep winner of last year’s IRC Category will also be in Marsamxett on the starting line.

As the boats make the final preparations ahead of tomorrow’s start, a Race Briefing and welcome drinks will be hosted by the Royal Malta Yacht Club this evening.
