Pembroke Athleta Athletics & Triathlon Club had an outstanding performance at the 2025 National Track & Field Championships, held on 2, 5 and 6 July at Marsa. The club won a total of 65 medals, 35 gold, 16 silver, and 14 bronze, showing strong results in sprinting, distance running, jumps, throws, and relays. This confirmed Pembroke Athleta as one of the leading athletics clubs in Malta.
One of the biggest highlights came from Gina McNamara, who set a new championship record in the women’s 800m with a time of 2:05.41. She also won the 1500m and helped the mixed 4x400m relay team to victory. In the age-group races, Dario Mangion broke the national record for the M35 1500m with 4:03.30, and Mark Herrera did the same in the M40 category with 4:12.03, then went on to win gold in the 5000m as well.
The Under-18 mixed 4x400m relay team, made up of Roberto Filletti, Faith Grixti, Alessandro Desira and Chanelle Bezzina, also set a new national best with a time of 4:05.75.

Several athletes delivered standout performances. Bradley Mifsud won all three throwing events: discus (49.55m), javelin (51.80m), and shot put (13.31m). Rachela Pace claimed gold in both long jump (5.94m) and triple jump (12.93m). Young sprinters Nick Bonett and Jorrin Busuttil were also impressive, with Bonett winning gold in the 200m and 400m, silver in the 100m, and helping win two senior relay golds. Busuttil won the 100m, finished second in the 400m, third in the 200m, and also contributed to two relay wins.

Janet Richard secured gold in the 400m with a time of 55.14 and was a key part of the women’s and mixed relay wins. Mark Herrera, a veteran of the sport, impressed with golds in both the 1500m and 5000m in the M40 category.
Pembroke Athleta won every relay event in the championship, women’s 4x100m in 47.32s, men’s 4x100m in 43.51s, and mixed 4x400m in 3:40.21. A second team from Pembroke also picked up bronze in the mixed 4x400m, highlighting the club’s strength in depth.
Club President Victor Camilleri described the championships as a defining moment for Pembroke Athleta, praising the efforts of both the young and experienced athletes. He said that the 65 medals and multiple records reflect the club’s long-term commitment to training and developing talent across all levels.
