The people of Birkirkara were united in mourning the passing of Victor Zammit, former president of Birkirkara FC and a towering figure in the locality’s sporting history as his celebration of life was held today. He passed away on Wednesday, 16th July 2025, at the age of 75.
Zammit was remembered not only as a football administrator but as a community leader whose contributions left a lasting legacy. He was best known for leading Birkirkara FC to its first-ever Premier League title in the 1999/2000 season, a historic achievement that brought immense pride to the town.
Serving as the club’s ninth president from 1996 to 2009, Zammit oversaw a golden era, during which the club won 18 official honours, including two Premier League titles and four FA Trophies. His leadership helped transform Birkirkara FC into one of Malta’s leading football clubs.
This morning the entire community came together for a solemn corteo in his honour. The procession began at the former Birkirkara FC clubhouse in Triq il-Wied, continuing through key streets of the town before arriving at the Basilica of St Helen.
The event saw the participation of local organizations, the Birkirkara Ultras, and all three of the town’s musical societies Għaqda Mużikali Sant’Elena 1919 A.D, Duke of Connaught’s Own Band Cluband Soċjetà Mużikali Sant’Antnin A.D. 1983. Victor Zammit’s legacy as a visionary leader and a passionate supporter of Birkirkara lives on in the hearts of all who knew him. His name will remain etched in the memory of the town not just for the trophies won, but for the pride and unity he inspired.
