Malta ended their UEFA Under 16 Development Tournament campaign on a winning note after overcoming Andorra 10-9 on penalties following an entertaining 2-2 draw at the Centenary Stadium on Monday.

The young Maltese side looked on course for victory in normal time after establishing a two-goal lead, only for Andorra to mount a second-half comeback and force the contest to a shootout. In the end, however, Malta dramatically held their nerve to secure the win.

The hosts had shown their intent as early as the third minute when Gianni Zerafa burst past his marker down the flank before cutting the ball back to Ayrem Aquilina, whose effort crashed against the crossbar.
Malta did not have to wait long to break the deadlock. In the sixth minute, a swift counterattack saw Jayden Roe surge through midfield and play Lukas Freddie Wright through on goal. Although his first effort was kept out by Nil Soares, the forward reacted quickest to slot home the rebound and hand Malta an early advantage.

The home side continued to enjoy the better of the opening stages and remained composed in possession. Midway through the first half, Liam Galea delivered an inviting cross from the left, with Roe meeting it well, but his header drifted just over.
Andorra struggled to create clear openings, though they did threaten in the 37th minute when Eric Cerqueda got on the end of a cross from the left, only to send his attempt wide.
Malta doubled their lead three minutes before the break. Another well-worked move on the counter ended with Luke Buttigieg breaking down the right before sending in a cross for Cole Zerafa, who cleverly flicked the ball into the net to make it 2-0.
The second half, however, brought a different pattern. Malta had a chance from a free kick just outside the area on the hour mark, but Nicholas Busuttil’s effort lacked power and was comfortably gathered.
Moments later, Andorra pulled one back after intercepting a loose pass in the heart of the Maltese defence. Nil Fernandez took full advantage, keeping his composure to guide the ball past Deyan Gatt and reduce the deficit.
That goal lifted the visitors, who pushed harder in search of an equaliser. They nearly found it in the 75th minute when an effort from inside the area took a deflection and flashed just wide.

Malta still looked dangerous on the break and in the 81st minute Busuttil had another sight of goal, but his left footed effort sailed over the bar after the Andorran defence had only half cleared.
Andorra’s pressure finally paid off in the 86th minute when Enzo Millan rose to meet an inswinging corner and found the net to level matters at 2-2 and send the match to penalties.
What followed was a marathon shootout. With the score locked at 9-9, the decisive moment came when Andorra goalkeeper Arnau Rodriguez saw his penalty saved by Deyan Gatt. The Maltese goalkeeper then stepped up himself and calmly converted the winning kick to complete a remarkable finish and seal victory for Malta.
It was a fittingly dramatic end to Malta’s tournament, with the young side showing both attacking quality and mental strength to come through a thrilling contest.
