George Russell claimed victory at the Canadian Grand Prix from pole position, fending off Max Verstappen at the start and securing his first win of the season with authority for Mercedes.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli achieved his first-ever Formula 1 podium in just the tenth Grand Prix of his career. The young driver overtook championship leader Oscar Piastri off the line after starting alongside him on the second row and crossed the finish line ahead of the Australian, capping off a thrilling and hard-fought race.
Drama unfolded just three laps from the end, with a tense battle between Piastri and Lando Norris. After overtaking and then being re-overtaken by his McLaren teammate in the final chicane, Norris lost control and crashed into the pit wall, an unforced error that brought out the Safety Car, which stayed on track until the checkered flag.
It was a lacklustre race for Ferrari despite the final result. Charles Leclerc expressed frustration over team strategy via radio but ultimately finished fifth, benefitting from Norris’s retirement. He came in just ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who struggled with a damaged car following a collision with a groundhog, a recurring feature in Canadian GP history.
In the championship standings, Piastri extended his lead over Norris from ten to 22 points. Verstappen, meanwhile, gained six points on Piastri and now trails him by 33.
