Mercedes could be planning a big move for 2026, with reports from Sky Sports Italia suggesting they are interested in signing Max Verstappen. The Dutch driver, who is under contract with Red Bull until 2028, is said to have a clause that allows him to leave if his car is not competitive.
Following a difficult run and a retirement in Austria, Verstappen is now 61 points behind championship leader Oscar Piastri and is reportedly considering his options.
Talks between Verstappen and Mercedes may be progressing, with hopes of making a deal before the summer break.
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff hasn’t denied rumours of talks with Max Verstappen, saying it’s his job to look at all options in the driver market.
Former driver Martin Brundle said on Sky Sports,
“I think George Russell is a bit nervous. There is no smoke without fire. 2026 will bring major changes to the sport. If Max can leave, something must be happening.”
If Verstappen joins Mercedes, Red Bull could lose both seats, as Yuki Tsunoda’s form has not been strong. This could lead to a reshuffle of drivers across several teams.

Asked about the rumours, Verstappen told Viaplay,
“I do not need to say much. The more I speak, the more stories appear. I control my own future.”
He added that while the title race is still open, the next few races will be key,
“There will be updates. Around the summer break we will know more. I am relaxed and just doing my job.”
