Hamilton edges Verstappen in thrilling Shanghai Sprint Qualifying battle

Lewis Hamilton rolled back the years in sensational fashion during Friday’s Sprint Qualifying session at the Chinese Grand Prix, narrowly beating long time rival Max Verstappen to secure pole position for Saturday’s Sprint Race in Shanghai.

The seven time world champion delivered a blistering lap of 1:30.849 on the resurfaced and reprofiled Shanghai International Circuit, pipping Verstappen by just 18 thousandths of a second in a throwback front row lockout featuring 11 world titles between the two.

“I didn’t expect to be that quick,” admitted a visibly surprised Hamilton post session. “The car felt great out there, and it’s incredible to be back at the front.”

Hamilton’s performance not only marked a personal resurgence but also reignited a rivalry with Verstappen that many thought had cooled in recent seasons. The Dutchman, who has dominated much of recent Formula 1 history, was left just a whisker short of top spot despite a near flawless lap in the Red Bull.

Close Battle Behind the Front Row

Behind the lead duo, Oscar Piastri continued to impress, securing third on the grid in his McLaren Mercedes. His lap was just 80 thousandths off Hamilton’s benchmark, highlighting the tight margins at the front. Lining up alongside him will be Charles Leclerc, who qualified fourth in the Ferrari SF 25, albeit 208 thousandths off his team mate’s pole time. The Monegasque appeared frustrated with his final effort and was seen shaking his head on the cool down lap.

In fifth was George Russell in the second Mercedes, posting a solid effort 0.320 seconds off Hamilton. He’ll share the third row with Lando Norris, who had been tipped as the favourite for pole following his strong practice form. However, the Briton made a costly error on his fastest lap, ending the session 0.544 seconds off the pace and aborting his final run.

Both McLaren drivers attempted a second flying lap in the final segment (SQ3), but while Piastri marginally improved, Norris abandoned his lap and headed straight for the pits.

Midfield Shuffle and Rookie Standouts

Mercedes junior Andrea Kimi Antonelli, still only 18 years old, continued to show promise by qualifying seventh in the second Silver Arrow, 0.889 seconds behind Hamilton. He’ll start on the fourth row alongside a resurgent Yuki Tsunoda, whose eighth place effort for the VISA Cash App Racing Bulls was among the session’s surprises. Tsunoda’s single lap pace has been a highlight over the past two race weekends.

Alexander Albon and Lance Stroll completed the top ten, representing Williams Mercedes and Aston Martin respectively. Behind them, Fernando Alonso found himself only 11th in a less competitive Aston Martin, while Oliver Bearman impressed again in the Haas Ferrari with a calm and precise lap to take 12th, a marked improvement over his Melbourne showing.

Further down the order, Carlos Sainz, now with Williams Mercedes, could only manage 13th, once again trailing team mate Albon. He shares the seventh row with Gabriel Bortoleto, who for the second consecutive qualifying session manoeuvred his Sauber through to SQ2 with skill and consistency.

The eighth row features Isack Hadjar (VISA Cash App Racing Bulls) and Jack Doohan, who led Alpine’s disappointing day in 16th. Pierre Gasly, expected to deliver more for the French squad, languished in 17th, while Esteban Ocon, ousted from Alpine last year, lines up 18th in his Haas.

Bringing up the rear are Nico Hülkenberg in the second Sauber and Liam Lawson, whose struggles in the Red Bull have drawn comparisons with Sergio Perez’s inconsistent form in past seasons.

Eyes on the Sprint

Saturday’s Sprint Race promises fireworks, with Hamilton and Verstappen set to renew their storied rivalry at the front and a tightly packed chasing field behind. With tyre degradation a key factor at the Shanghai circuit and rain a possibility, strategy and precision will be crucial.

The full grid offers a fascinating mix of youth and experience, surprises and comebacks, the perfect recipe for a dramatic Sprint battle in China.
