Marsaxlokk secured an important victory over Gżira United with a late goal, earning a deserved three points in a closely contested match. The win moves Marsaxlokk up to 12 points, while Gżira remain on 8 points.
The first real chance came in the 39th minute for the Maroons, when Maltese international Gabriel Bohrer delivered a free-kick that was well saved by Matthew Calleja Cremona, pushing the ball out for a corner.
The second half saw Marsaxlokk pressing forward. In the 52nd minute, Dodo broke through from the right and fired a shot that was blocked by Giulio Mangano. Jose Arias Ulises attempted to capitalise on the rebound, but Gżira’s defence managed to clear the danger.
Marsaxlokk eventually found the breakthrough in the 80th minute when Dodo delivered a precise cross from the right, met by former Ħamrun Spartans player Juan Corbalan, who headed home to give his side the lead. Gżira U. 0-1 M’Xlokk.
In the 89th minute, Marsaxlokk had another opportunity from a Leandro Aguirre free-kick, but Gżira’s defence managed to clear the ball just before it crossed the line.
Marsaxlokk finished the match with 10 men after Duvan Torres was shown a straight red card for a violent offence inside his penalty area.
