As Tottenham Hotspur’s quest for a permanent replacement for Antonio Conte continues, former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso has emerged as the frontrunner for the job.
The Spurs hierarchy has been on the lookout for a new manager ever since sacking Cristian Stellini and letting Ryan Mason take the interim role.
Despite recent struggles, Spurs are still in the race for a top-seven finish in the Premier League. However, their efforts to attract a new head coach have been impacted by the lack of clarity over next season.
While Feyenoord’s Arne Slot has also been considered, reports suggest that Spurs are more drawn towards Alonso’s vast experience and success during his playing days. Alonso has won multiple domestic and Champions League titles in different countries, making him a top pick for the role.
In just one season as Bayer Leverkusen’s head coach, the 41-year-old Spaniard has transformed the struggling German squad into a contender for European qualification. Currently, Leverkusen sits sixth in the Bundesliga table and has also made it to the Europa League semi-finals, where they will face Roma.
With his impressive track record, Alonso is likely to be in demand soon. Spurs may face stiff competition from other clubs if they decide to approach the Leverkusen boss for the vacant position at Tottenham Hotspur.
Tottenham will play Crystal Palace in the Premier League on the 6th of May
