Tottenham Hotspur earned three crucial points in their bid to reach the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa League, beating struggling Bundesliga side TSG Hoffenheim 3-2. This victory ensured Spurs remained in the top eight heading into the final round of group matches.
Both teams were low on confidence before the match, so the points on offer were even more important. Spurs started strongly, with James Maddison scoring an early goal after controlling Pedro Porro’s long pass and finishing well. Porro himself had a chance to score soon after, but his shot went wide.
Hoffenheim then had a penalty appeal for handball turned down, and Spurs quickly doubled their lead when Son Heung-min’s shot deflected into the net. Hoffenheim gradually got into the game, with Spurs’ goalkeeper Brandon Austin saving efforts from Tom Bischof and Max Moerstedt, while Oliver Baumann denied Lucas Bergvall just before halftime.

Hoffenheim needed a response in the second half, and they almost got one early when Andrej Kramarić’s header hit the crossbar. The hosts kept the pressure on, with Bischof’s shot going just wide before a penalty was awarded to Hoffenheim for a foul by Austin. However, after reviewing the decision on the pitchside monitor, the referee overturned it, deciding Austin had touched the ball first. Despite the reprieve, Hoffenheim pulled a goal back moments later with Anton Stach scoring from a counterattack.
The match looked like it might get tense for Spurs, but in the 77th minute, Son scored his second of the game, finding the bottom corner after a turnover of possession. That seemed to settle things, though a late header from David Mokwa made it a nervy finish.
Spurs held on for the win. Despite struggling in the Premier League with only one win in their last 10 matches (D2, L7), Tottenham are in a strong position in the Europa League, knowing that a draw against IF Elfsborg in their final group match will secure their spot in the last 16.
Hoffenheim, on the other hand, have only one win in their last seven UEL matches (D3, L3) and are now relying on other results to keep their European hopes alive, sitting just one point outside the play-off spots.
