Bayern stun Real Madrid at the Bernabéu to seize control of quarter final

Bayern Munich claimed a dramatic 2-1 victory away to Real Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final, putting themselves in a strong position to reach the last four for the 22nd time.

The Santiago Bernabéu provided a fitting stage for a meeting between two of the competition’s most decorated clubs, and the contest quickly lived up to expectations with a high-quality opening period.

Bayern started the brighter of the two sides and were left wondering how they had not taken the lead when Dayot Upamecano failed to make proper contact with Harry Kane’s headed pass from close range.

Real Madrid gradually began to threaten on the counterattack, with Manuel Neuer called into action to deny Kylian Mbappé after a clever through ball from Arda Güler.

The experienced Bayern goalkeeper continued to keep the visitors level, first producing another excellent stop to frustrate Mbappé before making an even finer save to keep out a powerful Vinícius Júnior effort heading towards the bottom corner.

Despite Madrid’s moments of danger, Bayern deservedly went ahead five minutes before half-time. A swift passing move cut through the home defence, with Serge Gnabry supplying a perfectly weighted through ball for Luis Díaz, who calmly finished past Andriy Lunin.

Madrid’s problems worsened almost immediately after the restart. Within 30 seconds of the second half getting underway, Michael Olise produced a strong run before laying the ball off for Kane, who swept a fine effort beyond Lunin from the edge of the area to make it 2-0.

Lunin did well to prevent Olise from adding a third on two occasions, but Real Madrid gradually began to build pressure as they searched for a way back into the tie.

They were handed a major opportunity when Upamecano’s failed clearance dropped straight to Vinícius, although the Brazilian could not convert after going around Neuer. Mbappé also came close soon afterwards with an effort that curled just wide.

Madrid eventually reduced the deficit with 15 minutes remaining when Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered a low cross to the far post and Mbappé applied the finish, with the ball crossing the line despite Neuer’s attempt to keep it out.

The hosts pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, but Bayern held firm to secure only their second win in the last nine meetings between the two clubs.

The German side now take a slender but significant advantage into the second leg and have given themselves every chance of moving one step closer to a seventh European crown.
