The football world is once again in mourning following the tragic death of Diogo Jota and his younger brother André Silva. The 28-year-old Liverpool and Portugal forward died in a car accident in Zamora, Spain, on 3 July 2025, just days after his wedding. André, an attacking midfielder for Penafiel, also lost his life in the crash. The vehicle veered off the road and burst into flames, ending the lives of two brothers united by football and family.
Jota’s career was defined by steady progression and undeniable talent. He rose from Paços de Ferreira to become a key figure at Wolverhampton Wanderers and Liverpool. For Portugal, he helped win the 2019 Nations League. André, while less prominent, was making strides in the domestic game. Their deaths have left the football community stunned.
This tragedy echoes a painful history. In 1989, Italian World Cup winner Gaetano Scirea died in a car crash in Poland. Just days earlier, Polish legend Kazimierz Deyna also died in a crash in the United States.
Air disasters have left some of the deepest scars. In 1949, the entire Grande Torino team died in the Superga air crash, one of Italy’s darkest sporting days. In 1958, the Munich disaster took the lives of eight Manchester United players, devastating the Busby Babes generation. The Zambian national team was lost in a 1993 plane crash, and in 2016, 71 people, including 19 players, died in the Chapecoense crash as the Brazilian team travelled to the Copa Sudamericana final.
On the pitch, sudden heart failure has also taken lives. Marc-Vivien Foé collapsed during a Confederations Cup match in 2003. Miklós Fehér died in a Portuguese league game in 2004, and Sevilla’s Antonio Puerta passed away in 2007 after collapsing during a La Liga match.
Other accidents have claimed stars more recently. In 2019, Emiliano Sala died in a plane crash while flying to join Cardiff City. That same year, José Antonio Reyes died in a car accident, and in 2022, Freddy Rincón passed away after a road collision.
Each story is different, but all are marked by the same suddenness and sorrow. Now, with the deaths of Diogo and André, the sport faces another cruel loss. Cristiano Ronaldo wrote, “It doesn’t make sense. Rest in peace Diogo and André. We will miss you.” Fans at Anfield and across Portugal continue to grieve, laying flowers and tributes in memory.
Football is a game of joy and passion, but its history is also written in grief. From Superga and Munich to the present day, the sport remembers its fallen. And in the memory of Diogo and André, it finds another reason to pause, reflect and honour those who left the pitch far too soon.
