Sudakov says Kyiv home was hit as Russia launches largest air attack of the war

Ukraine international Heorhiy Sudakov says the apartment building where he lives in Kyiv was damaged during an overnight drone and missile barrage that officials described as the largest air attack since the start of the war. The Benfica midfielder was away on national team duty and later shared images of rubble on Instagram.

Ukrainian authorities said at least four people, including an infant, were killed as strikes set the main government building in central Kyiv on fire and damaged residential blocks in the Sviatoshynskyi district. More than twenty people were reported injured, with air alerts in the capital and surrounding region lasting over eleven hours. Russia’s defence ministry said it targeted military industrial sites and transport infrastructure.

Sudakov, who moved from Shakhtar Donetsk to Benfica in the close season, had recently been tied with Robin van Persie’s Netherlands scoring record as an opponent but now finds himself speaking about the toll on civilians at home. He wrote that he was proud of his country and thanked those offering help, while emphasising that his family were safe. Reuters could not immediately verify the exact location shown in his posts.

Officials said several floors of a nine-storey residential building were partially destroyed in the city’s west, while falling debris caused fires on a sixteen-storey block and two further nine-storey buildings. The scale of the assault prompted renewed calls from Kyiv for stronger air defences.
