Wesley marked his AS Roma debut with the decisive goal in a 1–0 victory over Bologna at the Stadio Olimpico, halting the Rossoblù’s five-match unbeaten run in this fixture, their longest sequence since 1939. With Gian Piero Gasperini in the home dugout for the first time, Roma emerged from a frenetic opening to take control and, ultimately, the points.
Evan Ferguson twice tested Łukasz Skorupski in the early exchanges, before the Bologna goalkeeper almost gifted Roma a lead when his attempted pass ricocheted off Matías Soulé and bounced tamely back into his grasp. Ferguson then headed wide from an Angeliño cross, and Bryan Cristante glanced a Soulé free-kick against the woodwork as Roma pressed before the drinks break. Bologna suffered a setback shortly after the restart in play when debutant Ciro Immobile pulled up and was forced off. Wesley curled one effort wide, while Santiago Castro blazed over at the other end.
Castro struck the crossbar within three minutes of the second half beginning, but Roma made the breakthrough on 53 minutes. Pouncing on a lax pass from Jhon Lucumí, Wesley stole possession and rolled his finish beyond Skorupski into the bottom corner. Bologna sought an immediate response, with Riccardo Orsolini drawing a save from Mile Svilar, yet Roma should have doubled their lead when Ferguson’s cross found Manu Koné unmarked, only for the midfielder to slide his effort wide.
After Paulo Dybala’s introduction, the Argentine had a drive punched clear, and, at the other end, Evan Ndicka’s block denied substitute Federico Bernardeschi. Roma saw out the closing stages with composure to extend their unbeaten Serie A run to 23 matches, while Bologna slipped to a fourth straight league defeat for the first time since August 2018.
