Italian referee Federico La Penna is expected to be suspended for up to a month following the controversial Derby d’Italia between Inter and Juventus, a match played in a surreal and hostile environment that has since led to death threats and widespread fallout.
The encounter, which Inter won 3-2, has remained at the centre of the Italian football debate after La Penna sent off Juventus defender Pierre Kalulu at a key moment of the match. Italian refereeing chief Gianluca Rocchi publicly described the call as “clearly incorrect”, paving the way for disciplinary action.
According to reports from Italian media, La Penna is set to be stood down for around a month. The decision is aimed at allowing the referee to regain composure following the intense criticism and pressure he faced in the aftermath of the game. While there is a slim possibility he could be quickly reassigned to a match to help him overcome the shock, this scenario is considered unlikely.
More serious, however, has been the wave of abuse directed at the official. La Penna has reportedly filed a formal complaint with the Police after receiving multiple death threats online, including messages targeting his wife and two young daughters. The threats, described as shocking and unacceptable, have highlighted the extreme tensions surrounding the fixture.

Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni has also been caught in the storm. The Italian international and his family were subjected to heavy insults and death threats on social media following the incident that led to Kalulu’s dismissal. Bastoni was accused by sections of Juventus supporters of exaggerating contact in the build-up to the red card, forcing him to close comments on his social media profiles. Inter have strongly backed their player, insisting there was contact and rejecting claims of simulation.
The Derby d’Italia itself was played in an exceptionally hostile atmosphere, with tensions spilling beyond the pitch. Reports in Italy described heated scenes in the tunnel and dressing room areas at halftime, with strong verbal exchanges between members of the two camps as tempers flared. The intensity of the occasion was felt throughout the stadium, creating what many observers labelled one of the most charged environments in recent years.
Despite the controversy and chaos, Inter held on to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory in a match that will be remembered as much for its off-field fallout as for the action on the pitch. The events surrounding the fixture have once again raised serious concerns about abuse, pressure on officials and the increasingly toxic atmosphere surrounding high-profile matches in Italian football.
