Inter Milan increased their lead at the top of Serie A to three points with a 2-0 win over Atalanta, who have now lost to the Nerazzurri three times this season without scoring.
With both teams among the league’s top scorers, it didn’t take long for chances to arrive. In the seventh minute, Lautaro Martínez played a brilliant pass to set up Marcus Thuram, but his shot hit the inside of the post and bounced out. Atalanta responded 10 minutes later when Mario Pašalić’s header from Marten de Roon’s cross forced a superb save from Yann Sommer.
Goals have been hard to come by at the Gewiss Stadium recently, with Atalanta’s last two home matches ending 0-0. That trend continued as defences dominated, with Alessandro Bastoni and Ademola Lookman both missing the target before half-time.
However, Atalanta’s hopes of a sixth consecutive league clean sheet were dashed nine minutes into the second half. Hakan Çalhanoğlu’s precise corner found Carlos Augusto unmarked, and he headed home his third league goal of the season. Çalhanoğlu later tested Marco Carnesecchi from distance, and Martínez thought he had doubled the lead, but his goal was ruled out for a foul in the build-up.
Atalanta finally managed a shot on target in the second half, but Lazar Samardžić’s weak effort was easily saved by Sommer. Their night got worse when Éderson was shown two yellow cards within seconds – first for fouling Thuram, then for his reaction to the referee’s decision.
Inter took full advantage, sealing the win four minutes from time when Martínez smashed the ball past Carnesecchi. Despite Bastoni receiving a red card in stoppage time, Inter ended their four-game winless away run in the league. Meanwhile, Atalanta – whose manager Gian Piero Gasperini was also sent off – are still searching for their first Serie A home win of 2025.
