Atalanta drop crucial points in title race with stalemate against struggling Venezia

Atalanta missed the chance to move level at the top of Serie A as they were held to a frustrating goalless draw by Venezia in Bergamo. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side are now winless in their last five home games across all competitions (D3, L2), a worrying trend as they continue to chase league leaders Inter Milan.

With Inter and Napoli set to face off later, Atalanta knew that securing three points would apply much-needed pressure on their title rivals. However, La Dea produced a sluggish display in a scrappy first half that saw them struggle to convert dominance into goals.

It took until the 20th minute for the match’s first real opening, as Ademola Lookman weaved into space inside the box before smashing an effort into the side netting. The Nigerian forward remained Atalanta’s most threatening player, setting up Mateo Retegui moments later with a pinpoint cross. However, the league’s top scorer inexplicably headed over the bar from a promising position.

Retegui’s woes in front of goal continued as he missed another headed opportunity just before the half-hour mark. Venezia, on the other hand, struggled to pose any offensive threat, spending the majority of the first period pinned back in their own half.

Atalanta came closest to breaking the deadlock through Davide Zappacosta, whose curling effort clipped the far post. The woodwork denied them again before half-time when Juan Cuadrado’s powerful strike rattled the upright, summing up their frustrating evening in front of goal.

The hosts maintained their attacking intensity after the interval, dominating possession and creating several openings. Cuadrado was a constant threat down the right and delivered a perfect pass to Retegui, but the striker’s torrid night continued as he blazed over from close range.

Charles De Ketelaere then squandered a glorious chance, directing a tame effort straight at Venezia’s goalkeeper Ionuț Radu after Lookman’s cutback. Venezia, who had barely ventured forward, nearly stunned the home crowd when Mirko Maric’s strike from the edge of the area narrowly missed the target.

Despite relentless pressure, Atalanta could not find the crucial goal, leaving them third in the standings and two points behind Inter before the Nerazzurri’s highly anticipated clash with Napoli.

While Atalanta’s inability to convert chances cost them dearly in the title race, Venezia will view this hard-fought point as a small step towards survival. Their resilience paid off as they absorbed wave after wave of Atalanta attacks to hold on for a valuable draw.

However, the result does little to ease their struggles, as they remain winless in 10 league matches (D5, L5). If they are to secure safety, they will need to find a way to turn draws into victories in the crucial weeks ahead.

For Atalanta, this was an opportunity missed. As the race for the Scudetto intensifies, their lack of cutting edge could prove costly in the long run.
