The president of Barcelona accused of bribing referees

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has been accused of bribing judges, as part of the prosecutor’s investigation into the Negreira case.

He was president of the club in the period from 2003 to 2010, and so far he has not been accused of corruption.

Barcelona and its former presidents Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell have already been charged with corruption in the scandal surrounding Jose Mario Enriquez Negreira, a former soccer referee and Federation official.

The investigating judge in this case explained that due to the seriousness of the accusations, the case cannot become statute-barred, and Laporta will also be on the dock.

According to the prosecutor, the Catalan club paid Negreira more than 7.3 million euros between 2001 and 2018. The payments were made through the company Dasnil 95, which belonged to the former arbitrator, and the cooperation was terminated when Negreira lost his position in the Refereeing Committee.
