Radja Nainggolan Arrested in Belgium as Part of International Drug Trafficking Investigation
Former Belgian international footballer Radja Nainggolan has been arrested in Belgium in connection with an ongoing investigation into international drug trafficking. The ex-midfielder, who previously played for Piacenza, Roma, Cagliari, Inter, and SPAL, and is currently with Lokeren, has firmly denied any involvement and hopes to clear his name swiftly.
Authorities have confirmed that Nainggolan will spend the night in custody, as he is scheduled to appear before the investigating judge tomorrow for further questioning.
The Context of Nainggolan’s Arrest
Nainggolan’s arrest is part of a broader investigation into organised crime, focusing on the distribution of cocaine within Belgium. Law enforcement officials suspect that significant quantities of drugs were smuggled into the port of Antwerp from South America. However, the exact role of Nainggolan in this operation remains unclear.
On Monday morning, police in Brussels carried out around thirty house searches, mainly in the Belgian capital and the Antwerp province. It was during these operations that Nainggolan was taken into custody.
Nainggolan’s Reaction to the Arrest
Following his interrogation, Nainggolan’s lawyer, Omar Souidi, stated that the footballer was deeply shaken by the events. “Radja is greatly affected by what has happened. In the past, he has been mentioned in the media in connection with drug-related cases, but this is a different situation, and he finds it all overwhelming. It is unfortunate for his reputation,” said Souidi.
The lawyer emphasised the principle of presumed innocence, urging the public not to jump to conclusions before all the facts are established. “Why is he linked to international drug trafficking? That is part of the investigation, and I cannot disclose further details at this time,” he added.
Seizure of Nainggolan’s Vehicle
As part of the police inquiry, Nainggolan’s vehicle, a Smart Brabus, was seized from an underground garage in Brazilstraat. Investigators are also scrutinising his business connections, particularly his association with a business partner who was convicted in the United States in 2016 for drug trafficking.
This associate was reportedly involved in a case where Hezbollah ordered the removal of 1,100 kilograms of cocaine from Deurne Airport. Nainggolan previously defended his business partner, stating: “Just because someone made a mistake in the past does not mean they should pay for it forever. He is simply very good at his (new) job.”
The duo invested in a company that rents luxury villas and private jets to international footballers and DJs.
As the investigation continues, Nainggolan remains hopeful that he will be cleared of any wrongdoing. His legal team has reiterated their commitment to ensuring transparency and proving his innocence. The case has garnered significant media attention, with fans and the football community closely following developments.
Further updates are expected following his court appearance, where more details about the charges and the ongoing probe may emerge.
