Manchester City announces plans to expand Etihad Stadium into an "entertainment destination"

Etihad Stadium’s expansion to increase capacity to over 60,000

Manchester City has unveiled its plans to transform the Etihad Stadium into an “entertainment destination” by expanding the North Stand and increasing the second tier to create one larger, single upper tier above the current first tier. City’s concept designs focus on offering a best-in-class fan experience and a year-round entertainment and leisure destination. The club added 7,000 seats to the South Stand in 2015, which increased the overall capacity to 53,400. City’s new proposal aims to take the Etihad capacity to over 60,000, which would see them become the fifth English club to reach that landmark.

In addition to expanding the stadium, City has announced plans to expand the City Square fan zone to hold 3,000 supporters, and add a new club shop, museum, and hotel. The Citizens plan to offer fans “a broader range of dynamic matchday and non-matchday activities.” Furthermore, City will integrate “modest workspace” for start-up and medium-sized organizations, while exploring matchday travel measures to enhance existing services. The club’s construction program is subject to planning permission and would take place over a three-year period, with work carried out to ensure minimum disruption to the club’s football calendar.

City’s expansion plans are open for feedback from supporters and local communities between February 28 and March 26. The project comes as Liverpool plans to expand Anfield to accommodate around 61,000 people, further solidifying the trend of English clubs aiming to increase their stadium capacity. Manchester City will host Newcastle United in their next home game at the Etihad Stadium.
