Chelsea Hierarchy Considering Frank as a Possible Potter Replacement
Brentford head coach Thomas Frank has emerged as a contender to take over at Chelsea in the event that current manager Graham Potter is sacked. Despite Chelsea’s poor form, which has seen them win only three of their last 17 matches in all competitions, Potter’s job is safe for now. The Chelsea board committed to a long-term project when they hired Potter, awarding him a contract until 2027, but calls for his dismissal are growing louder following Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
Football Insider reports that Brentford head coach Thomas Frank is admired by the Chelsea hierarchy for his remarkable feats with Brentford. Frank led Brentford to the Premier League for the first time in 2021, and they are currently ninth in the table, just one point worse off than seventh-placed Liverpool. The report suggests that Frank’s style of play, ability to develop young players into Premier League-level performers, and his relationship with the press all work in his favor for the Chelsea job.
While Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly remains committed to giving Potter time to put his long-term plan into action, other members of the board are less optimistic that their form will improve under the ex-Brighton & Hove Albion manager. Mauricio Pochettino reportedly turned down the chance to succeed Potter, while Eintracht Frankfurt manager Oliver Glasner and former Spain and Barcelona boss Luis Enrique have also been linked with the role. There are also rumors that Jose Mourinho is open to a sensational third spell in charge at Chelsea, amid uncertainty over his future with Roma.
