The UEFA European Under-17 Championship Round 2 draw has set the stage for the next phase of the competition, introducing a new format that divides teams into League A and League B. Malta’s U17 squad finds itself in League B’s Group B5, alongside Luxembourg, Bulgaria, and the Faroe Islands.
This season began with 54 teams, including host nation Albania, competing in Round 1. The outcomes of these matches determined the composition of the leagues for Round 2: 28 teams advanced to League A, while 26 teams, including Malta, were placed in League B.
In Round 2, each group will engage in single-venue mini-tournaments, with hosts to be confirmed post-draw. League A teams will vie for seven spots in the final tournament in Albania, scheduled for 19 May to 1 June 2025. Concurrently, League B teams, such as Malta, will compete for promotion to League A for the subsequent U19 EURO qualifying rounds.
Malta’s placement in Group B5 presents a competitive challenge, facing teams like Luxembourg, Bulgaria, and the Faroe Islands. The Maltese squad aims to leverage this opportunity to gain valuable experience and achieve positive results, with aspirations of advancing in European youth football.
The new format of the UEFA European Under-17 Championship emphasizes development and competitiveness, offering young talents a platform to showcase their skills on an international stage. As the tournament progresses, all participating teams will be eager to make their mark and strive for success in their respective groups.
