According to reports, the LaLiga has submitted a request to the Spanish government to disband the troublesome Atletico Madrid ultras group Frente Atletico.
This move comes as Spain’s top football league aims to improve its reputation after incidents of fan violence and racism, including a recent case where a supporter was sentenced to prison for racial abuse.
The league has compiled a dossier documenting 142 instances of violence and racism committed by the Atletico group known as Frente Atletico, as reported by Relevo. The aftermath of the recent Madrid derby between Atletico and their fierce rivals Real has resulted in attempts to ban fans, but this has proven to be challenging.
In the match, Atletico’s Angel Correa scored a last-minute equaliser before Marcos Llorente was sent off in stoppage time. Tempers flared between players, and Atletico supporters even threw objects at Real’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois after he frantically celebrated Eder Militao’s goal under the Atletico ultras.
One such incident led to a 15-minute suspension of play while the situation calmed down. Atletico manager Diego Simeone tried to calm down the fans, and the television cameras captured him removing items thrown at Courtois from the pitch.
Simeone later criticized Courtois for provoking the supporters. The league hopes that their proposal to disband the Frente Atletico group will prevent further violent demonstrations.
