Since Sergio Busquets’ departure, FC Barcelona has been linked with several prominent midfield pivots across Europe as potential replacements.
Among them, Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich has remained on Barcelona’s radar. The Catalan club admires Kimmich for several reasons, including his extensive experience under Hansi Flick at both Bayern and the German national team, as well as his undisputed quality as a midfielder.
Adding to his appeal is Kimmich’s contractual situation. His current deal with Bayern expires at the end of this season, making him an intriguing prospect for clubs like Barcelona.
According to SPORT, Bayern Munich has set a clear deadline for Kimmich to decide on his future, urging him to resolve his renewal talks by the end of January. The Bavarian club has requested a definitive answer from the midfielder amid concerns that interest from Barcelona and Manchester City could sway his decision.
Bayern has already presented Kimmich with an offer and made it known they are keen to retain him. Despite his improved standing in the squad since Vincent Kompany’s arrival, Kimmich has yet to commit. One sticking point appears to be Bayern’s demand for a wage reduction in the proposed contract, which has left him open to exploring other options.
The coming month could prove pivotal for Kimmich, who has long been linked with Barcelona. While Xavi Hernandez reportedly expressed interest in signing him, Barcelona’s sporting director Deco ultimately ruled it out, citing financial constraints, doubts over his fit with the team, and a preference for prioritizing homegrown talent.
