Tonali makes first appearance since October 2023 as Newcastle edge Nottingham Forest on penalties in Carabao Cup

Sandro Tonali returned after a 10-month ban as Newcastle edged Nottingham Forest on penalties in the Carabao Cup.

Sean Longstaff netted the decisive spot-kick after Ibrahim Sangare and Taiwo Awoniyi missed for Forest.

Italian midfielder Tonali, back from a lengthy suspension for betting rule violations, played 60 minutes at the City Ground before being substituted.

Joe Willock put the Magpies ahead after just 18 seconds, pouncing on a rebound after Forest debutant Carlos Miguel parried Alexander Isak’s shot.

Newcastle nearly doubled their lead in the third minute when Isak set up Tonali, but Miguel thwarted his attempt.

However, the visitors faced a setback when Willock, who missed the season’s end with an Achilles issue, left the pitch with an apparent thigh injury.

Forest then equalised through Jota Silva’s stunning half-volley that ricocheted in off the woodwork.

It was Jota’s maiden start and goal for the club. Four players made their debuts from the off – Brazilian Miguel, young German right-back Eric da Silva Moreira, Aston Villa loanee Alex Moreno and Paraguayan forward Ramon Sosa.

Elliot Anderson, a recent acquisition from Newcastle, nearly scored against his old side but his chip went just wide.

Dan Burn, Harvey Barnes, Lewis Hall and Anthony Gordon all had opportunities to clinch the match for the Magpies before it went to spot-kicks.

Joelinton’s penalty was saved by Miguel, but all his teammates converted theirs to send the Magpies into the third round, where they’ll face League Two side AFC Wimbledon away.
