Kimmich named new Germany captain after Gundogan's retirement

Joshua Kimmich is set to take over as Germany’s new skipper, replacing Ilkay Gundogan who recently stepped down from international duty, as announced by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann on Monday.

Gundogan, 33, who played all five matches for Germany at Euro 2024, including their quarter-final loss to eventual winners Spain, hung up his international boots last month after earning 82 caps.

Kimmich, 29, who first donned the German jersey in 2016, has since racked up 91 appearances for his country.

The Bayern Munich star, who plays as both a right back and midfielder, will lead Germany in their Nations League clash against Hungary in Dusseldorf on Saturday.

Antonio Rudiger of Real Madrid and Kai Havertz from Arsenal will serve as vice-captains.

Germany’s other Nations League Group A3 fixtures include matches against Bosnia & Herzegovina and the Netherlands.
