Crowd 'madness' leads to Vienna derby away fan ban

The next four Vienna derbies will see no away supporters due to the disturbances at Sunday’s match between Rapid Vienna and Austria Vienna.

Thirteen individuals, including ten police officers and three fans, sustained injuries at Rapid’s Allianz Stadion following a post-match pitch invasion.

Authorities reported that both sets of fans ignited pyrotechnics before the Austrian Bundesliga clash, which saw league leaders Rapid secure a 2-1 victory, and that there were violent incidents during the game.

The decision was reached during a Monday meeting involving the league and both clubs, initiating a collaborative effort to guarantee “atmospheric and safe Vienna derbies” in the future.

“The clubs are making a significant move,” stated Bundesliga CEO Christian Ebenbauer.

“The Vienna derby is one of the world’s most historic fixtures and should highlight the league and nation positively.”

Rapid president Alexander Wrabetz declared: “Violence has no place here, and we strongly denounce it.

“It is crucial that we now devise the best possible solutions and strategies for the future to ensure that the Vienna derbies can once again be genuine football celebrations.”
