Former Spain Captain Set to Explore New Challenges in Upcoming Season, MLS Clubs Interested in His Services
Sergio Busquets, the former Spain captain, has made a decision on his future with Barcelona, reportedly informing the club that he will be departing once his contract expires at the end of June.
The 34-year-old midfielder remains an integral part of the Catalan giants, having featured in 29 matches across all competitions this season, contributing with one assist. However, there has been intense speculation surrounding his future, with various reports suggesting that he may leave the club.
According to El Nacional, Busquets has informed both club president Joan Laporta and head coach Xavi that he will be departing Camp Nou this summer. While Laporta and Xavi expressed their desire to keep the experienced midfielder, the deal currently on the table is far from what Busquets would require to sign a new contract.
Despite the interest from several Premier League clubs, Busquets is believed to be leaning towards a move to the United States, with Inter Miami reportedly leading the queue for his services. A recent report also claimed that Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr had offered him a deal.
A departure for the Barcelona captain would see the club enter the market for a replacement, with Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi rumored to be the leading target in that area of the field.
Busquets has featured in 709 matches for Barcelona since his debut in 2008, which puts him third on the all-time appearance list behind Lionel Messi (778) and Xavi (767). While he has no plans to retire, he is expected to explore new challenges in the upcoming season.
