‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ rings out at Anfield in moving tribute to Diogo Jota – match later halted over alleged racist abuse

Anfield delivered a powerful pre-match tribute to Diogo Jota and his brother André before Liverpool’s Premier League opener against Bournemouth, with the entire stadium joining in a stirring rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” and observing a minute’s silence in memory of the Portugal forward, who died in a car crash last month. Liverpool also retired Jota’s No 20 shirt and unveiled plans for a permanent memorial, while players from both sides wore black armbands.

The game was briefly suspended around the 29th minute after Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo reported racist abuse from a section of the home support as he prepared to take a throw-in. Referee Anthony Taylor halted play as stewards identified and removed a suspect from the stadium. The match resumed shortly afterwards, with the incident under investigation.

Liverpool’s tribute followed weeks of mourning across the game after Jota and his brother were killed in Spain on 3 July. Tributes poured in from clubs, players and governing bodies; at Anfield, fans displayed large banners and coordinated card mosaics bearing “DJ20” and “AS30”, and a special round of applause was planned at 20:20.

On the pitch, Liverpool took the lead through debutant Hugo Ekitike after the restart, but the occasion was defined by the emotion inside the ground and the swift response to the alleged abuse incident, which drew immediate condemnation.

Jota’s death at 28 was confirmed by authorities and the club in early July; the forward spent five seasons at Liverpool and was a key figure in recent trophy-winning campaigns.
