Newcastle United produced a strong second-half performance to beat Crystal Palace 2-0 at St James’ Park and continue their good run in the Premier League.
The first half ended goalless, although Newcastle thought they had taken the lead when Anthony Gordon scored, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. Both sides created chances in a fairly even opening period, but neither goalkeeper was beaten.
Newcastle stepped up their intensity after the break and were rewarded just after the hour mark. Bruno Guimarães opened the scoring with a well-taken effort following good work from Lewis Miley. Palace struggled to respond, and Newcastle stayed in control.
The home side made the result safe late on when Malick Thiaw scored Newcastle’s second goal, finishing off a strong team move. Palace pushed forward in the closing stages but were unable to find a way back into the match.
Newcastle enjoyed more possession and created the better chances overall, comfortably seeing out the game in front of a near-full crowd. The win keeps Eddie Howe’s side moving in the right direction, while Palace’s search for consistency continues.
