At the Professional Footballers’ Association awards on Tuesday, Manchester City’s Phil Foden and Khadija Shaw were named the player of the year in men’s and women’s English football for the previous season.
24-year-old Foden played a crucial role in City’s fourth consecutive Premier League triumph with 19 goals and 8 assists. Similarly, Shaw, a Jamaican forward, was the top scorer in the Women’s Super League, scoring 21 goals. However, despite her impressive performance, City lost the title to Chelsea on goal difference. Both Foden and Shaw were also recognised by the Football Writers’ Association, where journalists select the winners. On the other hand, the PFA award winners are chosen by professional players.

Chelsea’s attacking midfielder Cole Palmer was voted as the PFA young player of the year, while Grace Clinton, who played on loan for Tottenham last season, won the women’s prize. Palmer, who scored 22 goals in the Premier League, was only behind City’s Erling Haaland in the scoring charts and also provided 11 assists, the most by any Chelsea player.
Haaland had previously won the men’s player of the year award in 2023. Clinton, on the other hand, contributed four goals and four assists in 20 appearances for WSL.
