Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi is in an induced coma following emergency surgery for a serious abdominal injury sustained during Sunday’s 2-2 Premier League draw with Leicester City, according to multiple British media reports.
The 27-year-old Nigeria international suffered the injury in the 88th minute at the City Ground when he collided heavily with the goalpost while trying to meet a cross from teammate Anthony Elanga. Awoniyi, who had only just entered the match as a substitute for Ibrahim Sangare, received immediate treatment on the pitch. Despite his visible discomfort and limping, he played out the remaining minutes of the game.
On Tuesday, the BBC and other British outlets reported that Awoniyi had undergone the first phase of surgery and was placed in an induced coma as a precautionary measure. The situation, while serious, is being closely monitored.

Nottingham Forest issued an official statement confirming the surgery and providing a cautiously optimistic update:
“Nottingham Forest can confirm that Taiwo Awoniyi is recovering well so far following urgent surgery on a serious abdominal injury sustained during Sunday’s match against Leicester City,” the club said.
The incident has also sparked controversy off the field. Following the match, Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis entered the pitch and was seen in a tense exchange with manager Nuno Espirito Santo. The manager later explained that Marinakis was frustrated Awoniyi hadn’t been substituted sooner after appearing visibly injured. Espirito Santo attributed the situation to a breakdown in communication between the coaching and medical teams.
However, Forest moved quickly to quash speculation of internal conflict, branding media reports of a confrontation between Marinakis and the coaching staff as “fake news.”

Awoniyi, who joined Forest from Union Berlin in June 2022, has become a key figure at the club and a regular for the Nigerian national team. News of his condition has prompted an outpouring of support from fans, teammates, and players across the football world.
While the club awaits further updates on his recovery, Awoniyi’s health remains the priority. The hope is that the striker, known for his resilience and work ethic, will make a full recovery and eventually return to the pitch.
