Marta returns to Brazil squad ahead of Copa America as Elias mixes experience with youth

Brazilian football legend Marta has been recalled to the national team for the first time since last year’s Olympic final, as head coach Arthur Elias named the 39-year-old forward in his squad for a pair of friendlies against Japan later this month.

Marta, Brazil’s all-time leading scorer and widely considered one of the greatest players in women’s football history, had previously announced she would retire from international play following the 2024 Paris Olympics — where she secured her third Olympic silver medal. However, with Brazil preparing to defend their Copa America title, her return brings a boost in experience and leadership.

The Orlando Pride star, who recently extended her club contract through 2027 with the reigning NWSL champions, dismissed speculation about an imminent retirement. Coach Elias emphasized Marta’s current form and influence on younger teammates as key reasons for her inclusion.

“I was with Marta recently and spoke with her. She said she is available to help the team while she is playing at a high level, as she is now,” Elias told reporters. “Her presence in some call-ups is very important for the younger players, for the renewal that is taking place in the national team.”

Marta will line up alongside fellow Brazil regulars like Angelina (Orlando Pride), Debinha (Kansas City Current), and Kerolin (Manchester City), as Elias also introduces fresh talent to his evolving squad. Rising stars such as goalkeeper Claudia and defender Isa Haas have been called up as part of Brazil’s long-term planning for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

“We really want expectations to rise for the women’s national team and for football in our country,” Elias said. “This is the work we propose and hope that this evolution can really continue, even though it is always a challenge, because we train very little with the players and we rotate many to give them opportunities.”
