Newcastle United continued their strong record against Nottingham Forest with a 2-0 win at St. James’ Park, making it seven wins in their last eight Premier League meetings with Forest.
The home side started the match on top, with Joelinton twice going close in the first half. Matz Sels made good saves to keep the scores level. Forest struggled to create chances, managing just one shot in the first half, a free-kick from Morgan Gibbs-White that was comfortably punched away by Nick Pope.
After the break, Forest nearly took the lead when Morato gave the ball away to Nick Woltemade, but the Brazilian defender recovered quickly to block the shot.
Newcastle finally broke the deadlock just before the hour mark. Dan Burn set up Bruno Guimarães on the edge of the box, and the midfielder curled a brilliant shot into the top corner.
Shortly after, Woltemade hit the underside of the bar from close range. Sels made further saves to deny Malick Thiaw and Harvey Barnes, but the pressure paid off when former Newcastle player Elliot Anderson fouled Guimarães in the box. Woltemade scored the resulting penalty, firing it into the top corner.
Woltemade has now scored in his first three Premier League home games, joining Les Ferdinand and Alan Shearer in Newcastle history.
The win means Newcastle have kept a clean sheet in their last five home league victories. Meanwhile, Forest boss Ange Postecoglou is still waiting for his first win after seven games in charge.
