Manchester United continued their strong run under interim manager Michael Carrick with a 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford, increasing the pressure on Spurs boss Thomas Frank.
Tottenham started the match brightly and had the first chance when Conor Gallagher met a clever pass from Xavi Simons, but he failed to trouble goalkeeper Senne Lammens. That proved to be Spurs’ best moment of the first half, as United soon took control of the game.
United created several chances through Matheus Cunha and Bruno Fernandes, cutting through the Tottenham defence with ease. The match turned in United’s favour when Spurs captain Cristian Romero was sent off for a reckless challenge on Casemiro just before the half-hour mark.
Seven minutes later, United took the lead. A corner was worked to Bryan Mbeumo, who calmly placed the ball into the bottom corner for his 10th goal of the season. Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario kept the score down with saves from Casemiro and Amad Diallo before the break.
United thought they had doubled their lead early in the second half, but Amad’s goal was ruled out for offside. Tottenham threatened briefly when Xavi Simons fired just wide, while Vicario continued to deny United a second goal as the home side pushed forward.
Any hopes of a Spurs comeback ended 10 minutes from time. Bruno Fernandes met a fine pass from Diogo Dalot and finished at the back post to seal the win.
United remain firmly in the top four after their fourth straight victory. Tottenham, meanwhile, are without a league win in eight matches and sit 14th in the table.
