Pep Guardiola has called on Manchester City fans to create a charged atmosphere for Tuesday’s vital home fixture against Aston Villa, labeling it a “final” in their fight for Champions League qualification.
City currently sit fourth in the table with 58 points—just one point ahead of Villa, who are seventh—making every remaining game crucial as the top five secure Champions League spots.
“Every point, every game counts,” Guardiola said. “We need our fans from the first minute. Don’t wait. Even if we’re sloppy or not playing well, this is the moment we need them the most. It’s a final, absolutely a final for us.”
Champions League-Level Opponents
Guardiola praised Villa’s recent showing against PSG in the Champions League quarter-finals, where Unai Emery’s side won the second leg 3-2 at home, though they lost 5-4 on aggregate.
“Villa are a real contender. Both games against PSG – wow. I was really impressed. They can sit deep, they can press, they’re dangerous on the break and set pieces – they’re well-organised and very effective.”
O’Reilly Impresses but Must Stay Fit
The City boss also commended young midfielder Nico O’Reilly, who scored in the 2-0 win over Everton while playing out of position at left-back. Guardiola highlighted the 20-year-old’s adaptability and technical skill but noted his next test is physical consistency.
“He’s never played left-back before, but he’s learning and helping us. He has to prove he can play every three days like Bernardo, Kevin, or Rúben. With the ball, he’s very good—great in tight spaces and has a strong shot.”
Summer Transfer Outlook
Looking ahead, Guardiola hinted that City may not be active in the summer transfer market for defenders.
“We’ll see if we buy a centre-back. I don’t think so—we already brought in two in January.”
