Ten-man Manchester United held their nerve in a thrilling penalty shootout to eliminate Arsenal from the FA Cup at the Emirates Stadium. The defending champions advanced to the fourth round in a chaotic match that was decided by goalkeeper Altay Bayindir’s heroics and a clinical penalty from Joshua Zirkzee.
The first half offered little in terms of excitement, with both teams struggling to break through defensively disciplined setups. However, the match came alive early in the second half when Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring with a sublime first-time strike on the counter-attack, giving United the lead.
United’s joy was short-lived as Diogo Dalot was sent off moments later after receiving a second yellow card. The dismissal left United with a daunting task, and Arsenal quickly capitalised. Gabriel equalised, hammering the ball home to level the score.
Arsenal had a golden opportunity to take the lead when Kai Havertz won a contentious penalty after minimal contact in the box. However, United goalkeeper Bayindir produced a brilliant save to deny Martin Ødegaard. The decision to award the penalty led to a heated exchange between players, with several yellow cards issued in the ensuing melee.
Arsenal piled on the pressure against the 10-man visitors but failed to convert their chances. Bayindir made a string of crucial saves, including denying Havertz from close range. United’s defence, led by a spectacular clearance from Matthijs de Ligt, held firm during Arsenal’s relentless attacks.
United almost snatched victory in extra time when Joshua Zirkzee’s deflected shot was brilliantly pushed onto the post by Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, sending the match to penalties.
In the shootout, United’s composure shone through. Fernandes, Amad Diallo, Leny Yoro, Lisandro Martínez, and Zirkzee all converted their penalties with precision. Bayindir cemented his status as the hero of the night by saving Havertz’s spot-kick, the German’s second crucial miss of the game.
Zirkzee sealed United’s victory by calmly dispatching the decisive penalty, sending the travelling supporters into raptures and securing their place in the next round.
United manager Ruben Amorim praised his team’s resilience, saying: “Going down to 10 men so early made it incredibly difficult, but the players showed character, and Bayindir was phenomenal. We deserved this.”
Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta expressed his frustration: “We created enough chances to win the game, but we didn’t take them. Credit to United for their defending and to their goalkeeper, who made the difference.”
With the holders advancing, United’s focus will now turn to the fourth-round draw, while Arsenal will look to regroup and channel their disappointment into their Premier League campaign.
The Emirates crowd witnessed a rollercoaster of emotions, but it was Manchester United who emerged victorious, keeping their FA Cup defence alive.
