Benfica is European champion after 62 years

Benfica won the title of European Youth Champions in football after they defeated Salzburg 6 : 0 in the final.

The scorers were Martim Neto in the 2nd minute, Enrique Araujo in the 15th, 58th and 89th minutes, Cher Ndour in the 53rd minute and Luis Semedo in the 69th minute.

This is the first title for the Portuguese club after 60 years and 11 lost finals.

The last European title was the European Cup, won in 1962.

In 1962, Portuguese club were led by the Hungarian expert Bela Gutman, who led the club to the European title after a turnaround in the finals.

Real Madrid led 3 : 2, and Benfica eventually won 5 : 3.

When Gutman left the club, he said:

“In 100 years, Benfica will not be the European champion again.”

The club also played in the Euro finals the following year, in 1963, 1965, 1968, 1983, 1988, 1990, 2013, and 2014-but did not win a single European trophy.
