Abdulai's hat trick propels Swieqi to big win over Mgarr, Birkirkara win to keep top spot

A five-goal performance by Swieqi United against Mġarr United took centerstage in this weekend’s action from Matchday 13 of the Assikura Women’s League.

Jose Borg’s Birkirkara maintained their top spot after a routine win over Valletta while Hibernians defeated San Ġwann to lift themselves into third.

Meanwhile, Lija Athletic scored their second win of the season after beating Mtarfa – the only team without points in this campaign.

Next weekend, the eight teams will return in action for Round Two’s finale before the championship will be divided in two four-team sections.

The Owls and the Greens rubbed shoulders at the Victor Tedesco Stadium in Friday night’s kick-off.

Led by coach Saviour Darmanin, Swieqi ran rampant in the opening 45 minutes as they opened a five-goal lead propelled by Rafanny’s third minute goal.

Forward Abdulai followed with Swieqi’s second goal before young midfielder Michaela Cachia fired home Swieqi’s third.

In the closing stages of the first half, Swieqi grabbed the other two goals through Abdulai who has now joined Mġarr’s Joelma with 18 goals at the top of the league’s scoring charts.

Joelma, on her part, scored Mġarr’s goal midway into the second half.

Birkirkara scored three goals in the first half to secure a comfortable win over Valletta and maintain their four-point lead over Swieqi.

Italian winger Marta Grosso broke the deadlock followed by Sara Saliba before Arianna Del Moral scored Birkirkara’s third past the half-hour mark.

After the change of ends, the Stripes added a fourth through Francesca Chircop late in the game.

Hibernians pipped Mġarr United to third after producing a commanding display to dispatch of San Ġwann.

Alexis Espitia scored inside the opening six minutes as she moves to 11 goals.

Forward Leah Ayres grabbed Hibernians’ second while midfielder Kayleigh Chetcuti made it 3-0 on the 23rd minute.

Five minutes from half-time, Ayres scored her second goal of the afternoon while captain Martina Borg scored after the change of ends to wrap up the five-goal victory for her side.

Lija Athletic secured just their second win of the season after beating Mtarfa in Saturday’s late kick-off.
