Croatia qualify for FIFA World Cup after victory over Faroe Islands

Croatia secured their spot at next summer’s FIFA World Cup with a 3-1 win over the Faroe Islands in Group L, simultaneously ending the visitors’ slim hopes of reaching the playoff stage.

The match began with Croatia creating the early chances, though Petar Sucic failed to capitalise on a fine cross from Ivan Perisic. The Faroe Islands took an unexpected lead in the 15th minute when Geza Turi capitalised on a mistake by Josko Gvardiol near the halfway line. Turi ran into space and fired a deflected shot past Dominik Livakovic, silencing the home support.

Croatia responded with increased intensity. Gvardiol redeemed his earlier error in the 22nd minute with a powerful left-footed strike to level the scores. The Faroese remained dangerous, with Jakup Andreasen hitting the post and Hanus Sorensen forcing a sprawling save from Livakovic. As the first half progressed, Luka Modric began to assert control, his first-time effort from 20 yards requiring a fingertip save from Mattias Lamhauge.

After the interval, Croatia intensified the pressure. Andrej Kramaric missed a close-range header, but Petar Musa seized on a loose ball in the area to put the hosts ahead. With the Faroes defending deep, Croatia dominated possession and looked increasingly likely to extend their lead. Ivan Perisic then combined pace and precision to deliver a perfect cross for Nikola Vlasic, who volleyed home at the far post with 20 minutes remaining.

The closing stages saw Croatia maintain control of the ball, while the Faroese made late efforts through Petur Knudsen and Andreasen, both of which were comfortably handled by Livakovic. The 3-1 result confirms Croatia’s place at the World Cup and marks the fifth away defeat in six games for the Faroe Islands, ending their hopes of qualification.

The win highlights Croatia’s quality and experience, with Modric, Perisic, and Vlasic instrumental in turning the game around after the early setback. Croatia will now prepare for the global stage, aiming to make a strong impression at next summer’s tournament.
