Germany edged closer to securing a place at next summer’s FIFA World Cup following a 2-0 victory against Luxembourg in Luxembourg City. Despite the scoreline, the match provided several scares for the visitors in the first half, as the hosts pressed with determination in their bid to avoid a winless qualification campaign.
The opening 30 minutes saw Luxembourg dominate possession and create chances. Daniel Sinani tested goalkeeper Oliver Baumann on two occasions, while Aiman Dardari came close to scoring from the left flank. A VAR review for a potential handball by Ridle Baku was dismissed, allowing the Red Lions to maintain their momentum and frustrate the German attack.
Germany, though, managed to maintain defensive solidity despite limited space. The first half ended goalless, a moral victory for Luxembourg, who had hoped to record their first post-war win over a German first XI.
Four minutes after the interval, Germany broke the deadlock. A long ball from Aleksandar Pavlovic was controlled by Leroy Sane, who quickly laid it off to Nick Woltemade, who sidefooted the ball into the net. Luxembourg struggled to respond, despite Olivier Thill creating a chance for Christopher Martins, who fired off target.
Germany doubled their lead shortly after in a similar fashion. From a throw-in, Sane received the ball just outside the box, passed to Baku, who then found Woltemade. The young striker ran into the area and drilled the ball home, marking his third international goal in just two appearances.
From that point on, Germany controlled the match comfortably. Luxembourg’s spirited display could not overcome the visitors’ efficiency, extending Germany’s unbeaten streak against the side and maintaining a dominant head-to-head record.
Germany can secure top spot in Group A with a draw against Slovakia in their next fixture, having scored 24 unanswered goals across their last five matches against Luxembourg. The result highlights Germany’s continued consistency in qualification campaigns, even when faced with resilient opposition.
