Group D of the Club World Cup continues in Philadelphia with a tantalising encounter between Flamengo and Chelsea, both of whom opened their campaigns with confident 2–0 victories. Now, they go head-to-head in a fixture that could decide who tops the group.
Flamengo arrive on a strong run of form, having extended their unbeaten streak to nine matches, including five straight wins. Their opening triumph over Espérance de Tunis was expected, but the Brazilian giants now face a far tougher test. For manager Filipe Luís, the match carries added personal weight; he made 26 appearances for Chelsea during his playing career and now looks to outwit his former club from the dugout.
Chelsea’s convincing win over LAFC on matchday one was another step in a strong run of results. The Blues have now won nine of their last ten matches across all competitions, a form that propelled them into the Premier League’s top four and secured UEFA Conference League glory. Confidence is growing within Mauricio Pochettino’s squad, and victory here would likely guarantee top spot and a more favourable route in the knockout stage.
This will be the first ever meeting between Flamengo and Chelsea. The London side holds a mixed record against Brazilian teams, having defeated Palmeiras in the 2021 Club World Cup final but lost to Corinthians in the 2012 edition. Flamengo, meanwhile, were narrowly beaten by Liverpool in the 2019 final, although they famously overcame the Reds in the 1981 Intercontinental Cup.
Flamengo’s recent defensive discipline has been a cornerstone of their success, with seven clean sheets in their last eight outings. Four of those wins came by two or more goals, underlining their control. Chelsea have also looked solid, with only one of their last six matches featuring goals from both sides. They’ve also shown a knack for second-half dominance, with seven of their last eight goals coming after the break.
Midfielder Jorginho, who previously won this tournament with Chelsea, registered his first assist in 32 club appearances during Flamengo’s opener. On the other side, Enzo Fernández came off the bench to score for the Blues and continues to deliver consistently in the latter stages of matches.
Flamengo have no injury concerns ahead of this clash. Chelsea, however, remain without defender Wesley Fofana, who is sidelined with a hamstring issue.
With both sides in fine form and boasting defensive resilience, this could prove to be a closely fought contest with limited chances. A low-scoring affair may be in store, but the stakes couldn’t be higher.
